Handmade Beaded Deerskin Umbilical Amulet!="times">
This wonderful brain-tanned deerskin amulet features traditional, sewn-on beadwork, fringe and jingle cones. It is fully handsewn, and unused -- made to contain a section of a newborn boy's umbilical cord to protect the life-force of the baby for his lifetime. It is recently made, during the 1980s, as a Absaroke made replica of Reservation period work. The artist's name is unknown, and it was traded in a collection of three items, all the same maker, all Absaroke. It measures 10 1/4" long, ex-fringe and cones. This is a beautiful example of traditional sewn-on deerskin cultural and spiritual work of the Northern Plains. The artist is Don Calvin. Here is an image of the underside:
