Spectacular, Linda Billie Third Phase Revival Chief Blanket! NO RESERVE!
This exquisite med. large-scale weaving is 100% wool, very thick, and uses aniline dyes -- possibly unraveled Bayeta cloth. Woven on a traditional vertical loom, it exhibits all the traditional hand marks of Navajo weaving. The weaver, from the area near Ganado, AZ, Linda Billie, is one of the better-known weavers who are resurrecting the late 19th century styles of weaving wearing blankets. These were worn by Navajo headmen and leaders as a mark of rank, and are now called "Chief Blankets". They almost always exhibit an almost square shape, red and black and white colors -- sometimes with indigo and horizontal striped patterns. It was collected in 1996 has been in light-fast storage since then. It is one of the best examples of this style of weaving we have seen at reasonable price levels. The bold, traditional pattern is really powerful, and would make this a prime candidate for hanging. This item measures 51" x 49" and shows off incredible work, high thread counts and very heavy weight wool -- typical of blankets rather than rugs. It is a fine, museum quality example of a very traditional, enduring art form. Reg.
