This wonderful, unusual necked buffware vase is not typical for the shape of Hopi pottery. It measures 6 3/4" in diameter and 5" tall. The decorative patterns are handpainted in slip in traditional design including fineline black slip lining and areas of polished orange slip marking off cloud point designs, quail patterns and the fertility spiral found in ancient Hopi pottery. The pot itself is softly polished buffware, but it also features a deeply incised shoulder of the type found mainly in Zuni traditional pottery. This may be the potter's reference to a time, during the Spanish conquest, when many Zuni clans left Halona to live with the Hopis up on the mesasin what is now Arizona until the threat had passed, despite the language difference. All modern Pueblo pottery like this piece, is directly influenced by the pottery made before 1400 in various Puebloan cultures in the Southwest. Of moderately thin walled construction and wood fired, this pottery vessel is made and signed by Adam Yesslith. If you are looking for a traditional pot for a collector, or perfect gift, this is a very nice example at a very reasonable price!
