This wonderful, flattened vase is shows several unusual aspects, not the least is the buff color. It measures 2 5/8" wide and 31/2" tall. The patterns are painstakingly scribed into the surface. A textured patteern is also pecked into background areas. The design features a hummingbird with inset turquoise eyes feeding at a trumpet vine flower. Modern Pueblo pottery like this piece, is directly influenced by the pottery made before 1400 in various Puebloan cultures in the Southwest. Of moderately thin walled construction and wood fired, this pottery vessel is made and signed by Helen Tafoya and marked Walatowa which is the name for Jemez Pueblo in the native Towa tongue. If you are looking for a traditional pot for a collector, or perfect gift, this is a very nice example at a very reasonable price!
