SquareTrade © AP6.0| Handmade Santa Clara Pueblo Stone Polished Blackware Water Jar This traditional jar features native clay, traditionally coiled and hand-formed, with stone polishing to a mirror finish and reduction firing to blacken the clay. It features the time-honored strong shouldered, necked shape, heavy-walled construction and is undecorated as are many of these traditional storage vessels. This wood-fired vase was created by potter, Birdell Bourdon in 2006. The black color is not too deep, tending towards deep brown. It is 6 1/2" high, 8 1/4" diameter. Santa Clara Pueblo, lying a few miles northwest of Santa Fe is the home of successive generations of very accomplished potters who have developed the art of blackware reduction firing and carved decoration alongside their beautiful, distinctive shapes and high polished vessels, using a stone and clay slips. Families such as the Tafoyas and Naranjos along with the Tapias and Chiavarrias have all worked to very high acclaim in blackware vessels which must be wood fired only. The color is from the smoke when the fire is smothered, and is not a glaze at all. If you are looking for a nice example of authentic Santa Clara Pueblo handmade pottery, then go no further!
