George Whitewolf's Caped Deerskin Trapper's Jacket This wonderful deerskin jacket is 100% handmade by George Whitewolf, a noted regalia and deerskin clothing maker. Mr. Whitewolf's work was seen in Kevin Costner's iconic movie, Dances with Wolves. He was called in to provide some of the authentic period items for several lead actors . Mr. Whitewolf sells primarily on the Northern Tier Pow-Wow circuit or by special order, and is a member of the Eastern (Dakota) Sioux Moncan tribe of Wisconsin. This jacket features heavy weight, chrome tanned deerskin, for durability. The jacket is buttoned up the fropnt with hand-cut horn buttons and the removeable cape features a centrally-set rosette of intricate beadwork in a sunburst design. The beader was Crow, but the artist's name was lost. The jacket is cut for approximately a 38 - 40" chest and measures 38 1/2" long from the top of the shawl style collar at the back, to the end of the fringe; It measures 59" across from cuff to cuff (the sleeves are set in) at the top of the collar in the back. The opening and all openings are fully fringed. The body measures 23" wide. There are two small, original holes which the maker patched carefully during construction, one of the back of the cape and one on a sleeve. Both are pictured in detail. Jackets like these were worn by French and English trappers and later by the Mountain Men of the Rockies. It is styled in authentic woodland tradition and is machine sewn, for durability. It is one of the best examples of this style of deerskin clothing we have seen at reasonable price levels. It may be belted or worn open. Deerskin clothing stretches and conforms to the wearer's body with extended wear. Adding a fine concho belt will make this key to an amazing outfit, which would be appropriate from any Western Ski Resort today, to a rugged mountain pass in the 1870s. It would also make a prime candidate for display wall hanging.
