| Handmade Santa Clara Pueblo Carved Black-on-Black Traditionally Decorated Pottery!
This traditional vessel features native clay, traditionally coiled and hand-formed, then deeply carved in a cloud/kiva motif. The background is black slip painted for contrast. It features a high-quality stone-polished surface. The black color is deep. The artist is Chris Martinez. The seed jar style evolved ffrom storage items which were made with an opening too small fro rodents to crawl inside and get to the seeds! They were also kept relatively small for use in dispensing seed during the planting season.
Blackware is wood-fired in the traditional manner, employing ancient smothering techniques to reduce the fire and carbonize the clay surface, giving it the black coloring. Santa Clara Blackware pottery is highly collectible and is prized for its unique designs and fine finish. The pot is signed on the bottom, and measures 2 3/4" tall.
