| Handmade Cochiti Pueblo Lidded Seed Jar Traditionally Decorated! This traditional vessel features native clay, traditionally coiled and hand-formed, then slip painted in a spiral/ cloud/kiva motif. The background is white slip painted for contrast. It features a smoothly sanded surface. The artist is Angea Taniero. The seed jar style evolved from storage items which were made with an opening too small for rodents to crawl inside and get to the seeds! They were also kept relatively small for use in dispensing seed during the planting season. This one features an unusual handled lid. Cochite pottery is wood-fired in the traditional manner, employing ancient techniques to produce durable, heavy items. Like Santo Domingo Pueblo, their linguistic cousins, Cochiti potters have worked very closely with tradition when it comes to decoration, shape and size. Cochiti pottery, rare these days, is highly collectible and is prized for its unique designs. The pot is signed on the bottom, and measures 5 1/8" tall, overall.
