Beautiful, Bright Snake Dancer Overlay="times">
This wonderful oblong pendant features traditional tooled/overlaid Hopi patterns in bright finish sterling silver with textured, oxidized background. The shape is gently domed and features a First Mesa Snake Dancer motif. There is also a symbol that relates to the kiva, symbolizing prayer and ritual. It measures 1 3/8" long, ex bale; and a 3/16" dia. loop bale for wearing on a chain or cord. It is hallmarked inside with the makers mark and is stamped sterling by artist Eugene Dalton.

Hopi silversmiths developed their signature overlay style by returning GIs after WWII, using money from the GI Bill to set up crafts co-operatives. One of the curators of the Museum of Northern Arizona, Barton Wright was instrumental in helping them recover and re-create ancient, truly Hopi designs in their jewelry making. It is today, one of the forms of American Indian silver jewelry in the highest demand world-wide, and still in relatively small supply. Imitated often, it is rarely equalled in detail, finish and design. Authentic Hopi work, like this pendant, is a miracle of the silversmith's art.
